“Just today I’ve met Brett Harvey who I have fantasised about meeting for quite a while. He’s been an inspiration for me for a long time actually and meeting him made my hands and legs shake quite badly….what was the question again?”

Sometimes its good to hear about individual success stories and Jake, from Newquay Cultivate, is definitely one of ours.

For Jake, 18, Cultivate opened doors. An aspiring filmmaker but with no outlet, Jake discovered RIO’s Cultivate programme through friends and joined the Newquay pilot hoping to find out how to create filmmaking opportunities for himself, in his home town.

The group decided to organise a workshop with filmmaker Brett Harvey, during which they made Dibs, now one of Chew TV's top films

With help from Cultivator Ellen Moule, Jake also put in a funding bid to develop his film expertise, which led to a commission from RIO to document the Cultivate process.

Since Cultivate, Jake has been commissioned to make a film for the St Petroc’s Society, has been featured as part of ITV Fixers and has decided to study film at University College Falmouth. His career as an up and coming filmmaker is well underway and all because he got involved in Cultivate.

That’s a pretty good result from our pilot approach to rural youth provision. Sometimes thinking about services differently can have dramatic results.
