Cultivate Portreath

Molly Weaver was recruited as Cultivator for Portreath because of her love of dance, culture, Cornwall and young people. Through her initial assessment, Molly discovered that the young people of Portreath were passionate about skating and skate culture, but locals objected strongly to the young people skating in the town carpark.

The skaters were constantly getting in trouble as a result so they would really like to build a skatepark to have somewhere to go but didn’t know how to get it started or raise the money for it. They’d previously applied to Our Money Your Dream but had been turned down three times. Working with the young people, Molly helped to pull together a plan to campaign for, raise money for and build a skate park.

With their energy focused and excitement levels up, the young people decided to try and break the world record for biggest ‘ollie’ (a skating trick) to raise awareness and funding for the skatepark. The group found a venue The Track, which offered to donate the land and they met with local architects to discuss building the skate park and how much it would cost. Knowing how much they needed to make they set about raising awareness and funds with a skate demonstration at Eden, a promotional campaign and finally the Epic Ollie event on the 4 April.

The event went down a storm and, building on the buzz, the young people have since gone on to start pulling together funding applications to the Big Lottery Fund and Our Money Your Dream in order to get the park up and running. The Portreath community has been drawn together through the focus that the young people have introduced as a result of Cultivate. On top of that, neighbouring village Illogan has heard about Cultivate Portreath and is now investing in the Cultivate programme in their area, hoping to see similar results.
